Do Photos Need an Acid-Free Mat?

An acid-free mat is a sensible choice when you want a photograph to stay clean and stable over time. It creates distance from the glazing and reduces the risk of the surrounding board affecting the paper.

01

What acid-free means in a frame

Acid-free mat board is made to avoid the acidic materials that can contribute to yellowing and deterioration. It is particularly useful for photographs, artwork, documents and keepsakes you expect to keep for years.

The mat is not only decorative. It acts as a spacer between the print and glazing, which helps reduce contact, sticking and the visual flattening that comes from pressing paper directly against a cover.

02

Consider the whole frame package

A good mat cannot compensate for direct sunlight, damp, heat or a frame that lets dust and moisture in. Use stable indoor placement, clean handling and a protective cover appropriate to the size.

For valuable or irreplaceable photographs, ask a conservator or professional framer about mounting and glazing. Everyday family prints still benefit from sensible materials and a calm room position.

03

Choose the mat as part of the design

A clean white mat is versatile, but warm white can flatter older photos and natural wood. The opening should reveal the important part of the image while leaving enough border to keep the picture from feeling crowded.

Common questions

Is acid-free mat board necessary for every photo?

It is a worthwhile default for photographs and artwork you want to keep in good condition. For a temporary display, the priority may be different, but archival materials are safer for long-term framing.

Does an acid-free mat prevent a photo from fading?

No. It supports the paper and keeps it away from the glazing, but fading is also affected by light exposure, print materials and room conditions.
