How Big Should a Picture Be Over a Sofa?

A single picture or group above a sofa usually works best at about two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa width. Measure the complete outside frame, not only the image or paper.

Practical framing advice for a piece that belongs on the wall.

01

Use the sofa as the scale reference

A small frame can look stranded above a long sofa, while an oversized piece can overwhelm a narrow one. Start by measuring the sofa and sketching a group or single frame within roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of that width.

If you are using multiple frames, measure the whole arrangement including the gaps. The group is the piece that should relate to the sofa.

02

Hang close enough to connect the composition

Leave about 6–10 inches between the sofa back and the bottom of the frame. That keeps the artwork connected to the furniture instead of floating too high on the wall.

Use paper templates for the finished outside dimensions and view them from the main seating position before drilling.
