How Many Pixels Do I Need for a 24×36 Print?

A 24×36 print needs about 7200×10800 pixels at 300 DPI, or 5760×8640 pixels at 240 DPI. Large wall art is often viewed from farther away, but the original file still needs real detail.

Practical framing advice for a piece that belongs on the wall.

01

Use the intended viewing distance

A print viewed from a few feet away benefits from more resolution than one viewed across a room. Use 300 DPI as a strong target, then consider the image’s subject and the wall position.

24×36 is a 2:3 ratio, so camera files often fit with little crop. Panoramas and phone crops may need more careful preparation.

02

Inspect details before committing

Check eyes, hair, foliage, type and high-contrast edges at the intended size. A file can have many pixels and still show softness from focus, motion or aggressive compression.

Use the frame-fit checker and keep the original file available for the upload. Avoid using a screenshot or an image downloaded from a social platform.

Common questions

Can a phone photo be printed at 24×36?

Sometimes. Use the original full-resolution file, check its pixel dimensions and inspect the subject at the intended size before ordering.

Is 24×36 a good size for landscape photography?

Yes. Its 2:3 proportion suits many camera photographs and gives a landscape enough wall presence to read as a focal piece.
