How to Arrange Pictures on a Staircase
A staircase gallery wall works when the arrangement follows the angle of the stairs while keeping each frame comfortable to view. Start with the main sight line and use templates to build the rhythm.

01
Follow the stair angle
The center line of the arrangement should generally rise with the stairs. Place the first and last templates, then fill the middle so the group feels like one diagonal composition rather than a row of isolated frames.
Keep the lowest frame clear of shoulders and handrails. Measure the outside dimensions and hardware drop, not just the photo size.
02
Use repetition to reduce visual noise
Matching frames or a shared mat color make a staircase wall easier to read as you move past it. A grid can work on a landing, while a looser salon arrangement suits a long run of stairs.
Tape every template first and check the view from both the bottom and top of the staircase before drilling.
See it before you order
Put the advice into a real frame.
Upload your picture, compare frame profiles and mats, and check the finished proportions before you commit.

Should frames follow the staircase angle?
The overall arrangement usually follows the rise of the stairs, while individual frames stay level. Templates make the diagonal easier to judge.
How high should the lowest staircase picture be?
Keep it safely above shoulders, handrails and traffic paths, then build the arrangement upward along the stair line.
