How to Clean a Framed Picture Safely

Dust the frame and glazing gently, keep moisture away from the print and mat, and follow the glazing manufacturer’s care instructions. A little restraint is safer than aggressive cleaning.

Practical framing advice for a piece that belongs on the wall.

01

Start dry

Use a clean, soft microfiber cloth or a gentle air blower to remove loose dust from the moulding and glazing. Brush away from the frame edge so particles do not collect under the lip.

Do not spray cleaner directly onto the frame or acrylic. Liquid can wick into the mat, print or backing and leave marks that are difficult to remove.

02

Clean the surface only when needed

If the glazing needs more than dusting, use a cleaner approved for that material on a cloth, not directly on the frame. Avoid abrasive paper towels, ammonia products and excessive pressure on acrylic.

Keep the frame dry and inspect the wall hardware after cleaning a large piece. Moisture and repeated movement can affect the hanging position.

Common questions

Can I use glass cleaner on a framed picture?

Only if the glazing manufacturer says it is suitable. Apply any cleaner to a cloth rather than spraying the frame, and keep liquid away from the edges.

How often should I dust a framed picture?

Dust when the room needs it, usually with a soft dry cloth. Avoid repeated wet cleaning unless the surface truly needs it.
