Canvas framing guide

How to Frame a Canvas Print

Canvas already has texture and depth, so the frame should add structure without flattening the presentation. A float-style profile leaves a small reveal around the canvas and creates a gallery-like edge.

Practical framing advice for a piece that belongs on the wall.

01

Check how the canvas is built

A canvas print may be wrapped around stretcher bars, mounted to a panel or supplied as a loose sheet. Those formats need different frame depths, so measure the actual thickness before ordering.

Look at the side edges too. A gallery wrap may continue the image around the sides and can be displayed without a traditional mat. A white or unfinished edge may look better inside a frame that hides the sides.

02

Why float frames work well

A float frame creates a narrow shadow gap between the canvas and the moulding. That reveal keeps the artwork from looking squeezed and makes the depth feel intentional.

Black and dark wood profiles emphasize the canvas as an object. Natural oak brings warmth to landscapes and organic subjects. Choose a profile with enough depth to clear the canvas rather than relying on a flat paper frame.

03

Hang canvas away from damp and heat

Canvas is more tolerant of casual handling than an unprotected paper print, but it still benefits from a stable indoor environment. Keep it away from bathroom steam, radiators and strong direct sun.

Measure the outside frame dimensions before hanging. The visual depth can make a canvas feel larger than a paper print of the same width, especially above furniture.

Common questions

Can any picture frame hold a canvas print?

No. Canvas can be thicker than paper and may need a deep or float-style frame. Measure the canvas depth and use a profile designed to clear it.

Does a canvas print need a mat?

Usually not. Canvas typically looks better with a reveal or float frame, while mats are more common for flat paper prints.
