How to Frame a Certificate or Diploma

A certificate should be easy to read and safe from unnecessary contact. Measure the paper, choose an acid-free mat and select a frame that gives the document enough presence without overpowering its typography.

Practical framing advice for a piece that belongs on the wall.

01

Measure the document and its border

Record the full paper dimensions and identify seals, signatures and printed borders that must remain visible. Do not assume the named certificate size matches the exact sheet you received.

A mat opening is often slightly smaller than the paper so the document stays in place, but it should never cover meaningful text or a seal. Preview the opening before mounting.

02

Use a mat to make the document feel finished

A clean white or warm white mat creates a quiet border around the certificate and separates it from the glazing. It also helps a document-sized sheet feel intentional on a wall.

Choose a frame profile that supports the institution or occasion without turning the piece into visual clutter. Matte black is formal; natural wood can feel warmer in a home office.

03

Protect it from light and humidity

Hang the certificate away from direct sunlight, damp and radiators. For irreplaceable documents, ask about archival mounting and glazing; for everyday diplomas, an acid-free mat and stable indoor location are a strong baseline.

Common questions

Should a diploma be framed with a mat?

Usually, yes. A mat adds a professional border, keeps the paper away from the glazing and gives the document more presence on the wall.

What color frame is best for a diploma?

Matte black is formal and versatile, while natural wood brings warmth. Let the document’s border, seal and room guide the choice.
