What Resolution Do I Need for a Large Print?

Large prints do not need the same pixel density as a small print viewed up close. The right file depends on the finished size, the subject’s detail and how far away people will stand.

01

Think in pixels at the finished size

A useful starting point is to compare the pixel dimensions of your file with the intended print dimensions. More pixels give the printer more information, but a large wall piece is often viewed from farther away than a small photograph.

Do not judge the file only by zooming to 100 percent on a monitor. A photo that looks imperfect up close can read beautifully at normal viewing distance, while a heavily compressed screenshot can show artifacts in both situations.

02

Protect the important details

Faces, typography, line drawings and high-contrast edges reveal softness first. If the image contains these details, use the largest original file available and avoid exporting it through multiple messaging or social apps.

For a soft landscape or abstract image, a lower pixel density may be less noticeable. The best test is a proof or a live resolution check against the exact size you plan to order.

03

Let the frame support the scale

A mat and a substantial outside frame can make a large piece feel intentional, but they also increase the total wall footprint. Plan from the outside dimensions and check the image crop before choosing the final size.

Common questions

Is 300 DPI required for every large print?

300 DPI is a useful close-view target, but large wall art is often viewed from farther away. The image subject, file quality and finished size matter together.

Can I print a phone photo as large wall art?

Often, yes, if you use the original file and choose a size that suits its pixel dimensions. Check the image at the intended size before ordering.
