Panoramic framing guide

What Size Frame Do I Need for a Panoramic Photo?

A panoramic photograph needs a frame that respects its wide ratio instead of forcing it into a standard rectangle. Start with the paper size, then plan the complete outside width on the wall.

Practical framing advice for a piece that belongs on the wall.

01

Measure the actual panorama

Panoramic images vary widely: a camera panorama, a phone crop and a commissioned print may all have different proportions. Measure the paper and confirm the opening before ordering.

Use a mat when you want to place a wide image inside a larger frame, but keep the mat balanced on all sides and avoid making the top and bottom feel overly heavy.

02

Give the frame enough wall context

A panorama often works above a sofa, headboard or sideboard because the long horizontal line echoes the furniture. Keep the piece around two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture width unless the room calls for a stronger statement.

A slim black profile keeps the composition crisp. Natural wood softens landscapes and travel scenes without adding much visual noise.

Common questions

Should a panoramic photo have a mat?

It can. A mat helps when the panorama needs a larger outside frame, but keep the border balanced so the wide image remains the focus.

How do I hang a panoramic frame above a sofa?

Center the finished outside frame on the furniture and leave about 6–10 inches between the furniture and the frame bottom.
