What Size Frame Do I Need for an 8×10 Photo?
An 8×10 photo can go into an 8×10 frame for a close, full-bleed fit, or into a larger frame with a mat for more breathing room. The choice depends on whether 8×10 is your paper size or the visible image you want to show.

01
Know which measurement you mean
An 8×10 photo usually describes the paper or visible image dimensions. The finished frame is larger because the moulding surrounds the opening, and a mat can make the outside size larger still.
For wall planning, always use the finished outside dimensions. For cropping, use the visible image or paper size. Keeping those two measurements separate prevents most sizing surprises.
02
Choose 8×10 for a tight presentation
An 8×10 frame is the most direct choice when the image already has the crop and presence you want. It works well for a small shelf, bedside wall or a group of similarly sized photographs.
A matte black or white moulding keeps the presentation clean. Natural oak makes an 8×10 family photo feel warmer without adding much visual weight.
03
Choose a larger frame for a mat
If you want a visible border around the photograph, choose a larger outside size and let the mat create the transition. The frame stays large enough to read on the wall while the image remains comfortably sized inside it.
Use the live builder to compare the same 8×10 image with and without a mat. That side-by-side check is more reliable than choosing from a frame size alone.
- 8×10 outside frame: close, compact presentation.
- Larger outside frame with mat: more breathing room and stronger wall presence.
- Landscape image: check that the crop does not remove important edges.
04
Check resolution before you print
Use the original photo whenever possible. An image that looks sharp on a phone may be too small once printed. The builder checks the selected file against the finished size and warns you before you order.

Can I put an 8×10 photo in a larger frame?
Yes. A larger frame with a mat gives the photograph more breathing room and usually makes it feel more considered on the wall.
Is an 8×10 frame exactly 8×10 inches outside?
No. The 8×10 measurement normally refers to the image or paper opening. The moulding makes the finished outside dimensions larger, so check those dimensions before hanging.
