Hanging guide

How Far Apart Should You Hang Pictures?

Start with 2–3 inches between frames in a gallery wall. The right gap depends on the frame size, wall scale and whether the pieces should read as one group or separate moments.

Practical framing advice for a piece that belongs on the wall.

01

Use a consistent starting gap

Two to three inches creates a connected arrangement without making frames collide visually. Larger frames can tolerate a slightly wider gap, while small frames often need a tighter rhythm.

Measure the outside frame dimensions and use paper templates before hanging. The gaps are part of the overall footprint and should be included when you center the group over furniture.

02

Create pauses between separate groups

If two clusters share a wall, leave a noticeably larger pause between them than the gaps inside each cluster. That tells the eye where one composition ends and the next begins.

Keep the frame profile, mat color or subject matter related when you want several pieces to feel like one collection.

Common questions

Is 2 inches too close between picture frames?

Not usually. Two inches is a common gallery-wall gap, especially for smaller frames. Test the arrangement with paper templates first.

How much space should be between pictures above a sofa?

Start with 2–3 inches inside a group and keep the whole arrangement about 6–10 inches above the sofa.
