How High to Hang Pictures: The 57-Inch Rule

Hang the center of a picture about 57 inches from the floor. That is average eye level, and it is the height many galleries use. Above furniture, leave 6 to 10 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the frame instead.

01

The 57-inch rule, step by step

The rule puts the middle of the artwork at eye level so it reads comfortably from standing. It works for single frames and for the center of a group.

  • Measure 57 inches up from the floor and mark the wall lightly.
  • Measure the frame height and halve it.
  • Measure from the hanging hardware down to the top of the frame (pulled taut if it's a wire).
  • Nail height = 57 + half the frame height − the hardware drop.

02

Above a sofa, bed or sideboard

When art hangs over furniture, the furniture becomes the reference. Leave about 6 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa back or headboard and the bottom of the frame so the two read as one composition.

Aim for artwork about two-thirds the width of the furniture. A single small frame will look stranded over a long sofa; use a larger size or a group.

03

Groups and gallery walls

Treat a group as one large piece. Find the center of the whole arrangement and put that at 57 inches, then lay out the individual frames around it with consistent gaps of about 2 to 3 inches.

Paper templates cut to each frame's outside size make it easy to test the layout with painter's tape before drilling.

04

When to break the rule

In rooms where people mostly sit, like dining rooms, hang slightly lower. Very tall ceilings or a stairway may call for higher placement or a vertical stack, but keep the art related to the furniture and people in the room.
