How to Hang a Picture Without Nails

You can avoid nails with rated adhesive strips, removable hooks, a picture ledge or a leaning display. The best method depends on the frame weight, wall surface and how permanent the placement needs to be.

Practical framing advice for a piece that belongs on the wall.

01

Choose a method that matches the frame

Adhesive strips are best for lightweight frames on clean, sound surfaces and within the manufacturer’s load limit. A ledge or shelf keeps the wall hardware out of sight and makes it easy to change artwork.

Large framed prints are usually safer with a stud, rated anchor or professional rail. Avoid adhesive products on dusty, damp, textured or freshly painted surfaces unless the instructions allow them.

02

Test the placement before committing

Use a paper template to check the height and composition. Clean the wall as directed, press the adhesive for the required time and wait before adding the frame.

Never hang a valuable or heavy piece from an untested adhesive. A frame that falls can damage both the wall and the artwork.

Common questions

What is the best way to hang a small picture without nails?

A properly rated removable strip or hook can work on a clean, suitable wall. Follow the product’s weight and surface instructions.

Can adhesive strips hold a large framed print?

Only if the specific product is rated for the complete weight and the wall surface is suitable. Large frames are safer with mechanical hardware or a rail.
