How to Level a Picture Frame

A frame looks crooked when its top edge, hardware or wall reference is off by only a small amount. Use a level on the frame and mark the hardware from a measured template.

Practical framing advice for a piece that belongs on the wall.

01

Level the hardware first

For two hooks, mark both points on a single level line. For a wire, mark the center hanging point after pulling the wire taut and account for the frame’s drop from the hook.

Use the frame’s finished outside edge as the reference, not the paper or mat opening. A slightly uneven moulding can also make an otherwise level image look off.

02

Check it from the room

After hanging, place a small level on the top edge and step back. Check the frame from the main viewing position because a nearby wall or furniture line can create a visual illusion.

For a gallery wall, level the major rows or shared center line first, then use consistent gaps to keep the arrangement calm.

Common questions

Why does my picture look crooked when it is level?

The wall, furniture or moulding may create a visual reference that is not level. Check the frame from the normal viewing position and prioritize the composition.

Can I level a frame with one nail?

Yes for some lightweight frames, but two-point hardware often keeps wider or heavier frames more stable and level.
