What Size Frame Do I Need for a 4×6 Photo?

A 4×6 photo fits a 4×6 frame for a compact, close presentation. If you want a mat or more presence on the wall, move up to a larger outside frame.

01

Use 4×6 for a compact display

A 4×6 frame is a natural choice for a desk, shelf, bedside table or a small group of family photographs. The image fills most of the opening, so check the crop and keep important faces away from the edge.

The finished outside dimensions will be a little larger than 4×6 because the moulding surrounds the opening. Measure that outside size when you plan a shelf or gallery wall.

  • 4×6 frame: close, simple presentation.
  • Larger frame with a mat: more breathing room.
  • Outside dimensions: the measurement that matters on the wall.

02

When a mat is worth the extra size

A mat helps a small photograph hold its own beside larger pieces. An 8×10 frame with a mat is a common step up for a more finished wall presentation, especially for a portrait or wedding photograph.

Preview the visible opening before ordering so the mat does not cover a face, signature or important edge of the picture.

Common questions

Can a 4×6 photo go in an 8×10 frame?

Yes. An 8×10 frame with a mat gives a 4×6 photo more breathing room and a stronger wall presence.

Is a 4×6 frame exactly 4×6 inches outside?

Usually not. The size normally describes the photo or opening; the moulding makes the finished outside dimensions larger.
