Print troubleshooting

Why Do My Printed Photos Look Dark?

Screens make images with light, while paper reflects room light. A photo can therefore look darker in print, especially when the screen is bright or the room is dim.

Practical framing advice for a piece that belongs on the wall.

01

Check the screen and room first

Phone screens are often set brighter than a normal print will appear. Compare the file at a moderate brightness and inspect the print in the room where it will hang.

A glossy or reflective surface can also change the perceived contrast. Matte or lustre paper and controlled wall lighting may make shadows easier to read.

02

Prepare the file carefully

Open the original file and lift shadows gently rather than applying a heavy global brightness change. Watch skin tones, highlight detail and neutral colors as you adjust.

If a collection needs to match, use the same display, paper and viewing light for the proofing process. A single screen preview is not a perfect color reference.

Common questions

Should I brighten a photo before printing?

Possibly. Compare it at a moderate screen brightness and in the room where it will hang, then lift shadows carefully without washing out highlights.

Does matte paper make photos look darker?

Matte paper reflects less light and can appear less punchy than glossy paper. Its softer surface is often easier to view in a framed room setting.
