What Is the Best Size to Print Photos?

The best photo print size is large enough to read from the room, small enough for the wall and compatible with the file’s crop and resolution. 8×10, 11×14 and 16×20 cover many everyday framing needs.

Practical framing advice for a piece that belongs on the wall.

01

Match size to the wall and viewing distance

Use 4×6 and 5×7 for shelves or small groups, 8×10 and 11×14 for compact wall pieces, and 16×20 or larger for a focal point. Above furniture, judge the complete outside frame or arrangement rather than the paper alone.

A mat lets a smaller image live inside a larger outside frame, which can be useful when the photograph is strong but the file does not support a bigger crop.

02

Check ratio and pixels before you print

A camera photo may not match 8×10 or 11×14 exactly. Crop intentionally and keep important subjects away from the edges.

Use the original file and calculate its effective resolution at the finished size. A technically larger print is not always a better print if the file becomes visibly soft.

Common questions

What is the most popular photo print size?

4×6 is common for small prints, while 8×10 and 11×14 are common framed sizes. The best choice depends on the wall and the file.

Should I print photos large or small?

Choose the largest size that the file can support cleanly and that suits the wall. Use a mat when you want more presence without enlarging the crop.
